How Do You Cause Your Own Suffering? | What I Know Now

“The world is full of suffering. It is also full of overcoming it.” ~ Helen Keller

Take a moment, close your eyes and get still and centered. Now as yourself the question, “How do I cause your own suffering?” Don’t rush, just listen for the answer. Your inner voice knows.

No doubt that this is tough question and it’s one that if you’re honest with yourself, can be the very thing that will usher you into your healing space.

I caused my own suffering by mentally retelling the story of what happened to me. I even put different spins by remembering, most times making up, what I heard the other person say, what I could have said, or what they did or didn’t do.

When we make our pain and grief about someone else, we make ourselves the victim, giving birth to suffering.

At ALL times.

Under ALL circumstances.

In ALL situations.

There is no one else in the room but You and God.

When we get clear about that, then we begin to understand that ALL things are there to support us in LEARNING, HEALING and LIVING BETTER.

Here are 3 ways that can support you transforming your suffering into self-love.

Develop and commit to a daily spiritual practice. Your practice may look different from someone else’s. Make it your own. My practice includes prayer, meditation, repeating mantras and journaling thoughts and affirmations. I set the mood with dimming the lights, burning candles, incense and playing music. If I so desire, I may color mandalas. The purpose of a spiritual practice is to get balanced, centered and be in sacred communion, communication and connection to your Creator. Try to engage in your practice at the same time every day. This will support your transforming and renewing your mind.

Reframe your story. As I shared with you above, my suffering was caused by me retelling the story, different ways in my head, inviting the victim mentality of the “would’ve, could’ve, should’ve.” Not only does this fuel the grief, it invites grief’s cousins, guilt, shame and blame. This kind of suffering is deadly. It begins in the mind and upsets the entire internal landscape. Your emotional, mental, physical and spiritual levels are out of alignment. Your daily spiritual practice, will support your in recognizing when negative thoughts start circling your head. You’ll be able to catch yourself and then re-create the story. Reframe in such a way that’s beneficial to you. As the questions, “What is my lesson here?” “What is that God that want me to know about myself?”

Forgive yourself. Your heart center is a very powerful space in your physical and spiritual being. It is the bridge from your lower energy fields and to your upper spiritual fields. If you get stuck in your heart, you will never be able to unlock your spiritual awareness and greatness beyond that. The heart is for giving. It is for giving Love. It is for giving Light. Giving these things to others is utterly important and beneficial, however they cannot hold much value until we have learned to give Love and Light to ourselves. Forgive yourself for all things. This is how you invite peace in your life.
